Tiny Bubbles Sweater & Bonnet free crochet pattern


This matching sweater and bonnet set is crocheted with bubbles stitches in beautiful pastel colors. It's a perfect set for your newborn or infant.
Skill Level 
Intermediate
Sizes 
3 months, 6 months, 9 months 
Note: Instructions are written for size 3 Months; changes for larger sizes are in parentheses.
Materials
  • Medium (worsted weight) yarn
    • 3 oz (210 yds, 90 gms) white
    • 2 oz (140 yds, 60 gms) each, pink, lt green, turquoise, lavender and blue.
  • Size F (3.75mm) crochet hook, or size required for gauge
  • Size 18 tapestry needle
Gauge 
In pattern: 2 bubbles = 1"
Pattern Stitch 
Bubble (bubble): In stitch indicated, work (sc, 2 dc, sc) - bubble made.
Sweater Instructions 
With white, ch 94 (100, 106). 
Row 1 (right side): In 4th ch from hook work bubble (see Pattern Stitch); * sk next 2 chs, in next ch work bubble; rep from * across - 31 (33, 35) bubbles. Ch 3, turn. 
Row 2: Sk first 3 sts, bubble in next sc; * sk next 3 sts, bubble in next sc; rep from * across. Change to pink by drawing lp through; drop white. Ch 3, turn. 
Row 3: Sk first 3 sts, bubble in next sc; * sk next 3 sts, bubble in next sc; rep from * across. Ch 3, turn. 
Row 4: Rep Row 3. At end of row, change to white by drawing lp through; cut pink. Ch 3, turn. 
Rows 5 and 6: Rep Row 3. At end of Row 6, change to lt green; drop white. 
Rows 7 and 8: Rep Row 3. At end of Row 8, change to white; cut lt green. 
Rows 9 and 10: Rep Row 3. At end of Row 10, change to turquoise; drop white. 
Rows 11 and 12: Rep Row 3. At end of Row 12, change to white; cut turquoise. 
Rows 13 and 14: Rep Row 3. At end of Row 14, change to lavender; drop white. 
Rows 15 and 16: Rep Row 3. At end of Row 16, change to white; cut lavender. 
Rows 17 and 18: Rep Row 3. At end of Row 18, change to blue; drop white. 
Rows 19 and 20: Rep Row 3. At end of Row 20, change to white; cut blue. 
Rows 21 and 22: Rep Row 3. At end of Row 22, do not ch 3. Ch 2, turn. 
Row 23: Sk first 3 sts, sl st in next sc; * ch 2, sk next 3 sts, sl st in next sc; rep from * to turning ch-3; ch 2, sl st in 3rd ch of turning ch. Ch 1, turn. 
Row 24: 2 sc in each ch-2 sp and in sp formed by turning ch-2 - 64 (68, 72) sc. Ch 1, turn. 
Row 25: Sc in each sc. Ch 1, turn. 

For Size 3 Months Only: 
Continue with Armhole Shaping. 

For Size 6 Months Only:

Rows 2 through 20: Rep Rows 2 through 20 of Sweater. At end of Row 20, do not ch 3. Ch 2, turn. 
Row 21: Sk first 3 sts, sl st in next sc; * ch 2, sk next 3 sts, sl st in next sc; rep from * to turning ch-3; ch 2, sl st in 3rd ch of turning ch. Ch 1, turn. 

For Size 3 Months Only: 
Row 22: 3 sc in each ch-2 sp and in sp formed by turning ch-2. 
Finish off and weave in all ends. 
Continue with Edgings. 
For Size 6 Months Only: 
Row 22: 3 sc in each ch-2 sp and in sp formed by turning ch-2. Ch 1, turn.

Hold sweater with right side facing you and right front edge at top; join white in side of first row, ch 1, 2 sc in same row; 2 sc in side of each of next 10 rows; sc in side of next row, ch 31, sl st in 2nd ch from hook and in each rem ch; sc in side of next 12 (14, 16) rows, ch 31, sl st in 2nd ch from hook and in each rem ch; sc in side of next row, 3 sc in edge of next row; working along neck edge, † sk next sc, sl st in next sc †; rep from † to † across to last sc; working along left front edge, 3 sc in edge of next row; sc in side of next row, ch 31, sl st in 2nd ch from hook and in each rem ch; sc in side of each of next 12 (14, 16) rows, ch 31, sl st in 2nd ch from hook and in each rem ch; sc in side of next 13 rows; working across bottom edge, 2 sc in each ch-2 sp; join in first sc. Finish off.
Sleeve Edging 
Hold one sleeve with right side facing you and beg ch at top; join white in first ch-2 sp between bubbles; 2 sc in same sp and in each rem ch-2 sp; join in first sc. Finish off. 
Repeat on other sleeve. 
Weave in all ends.
Assembly 
Sew sleeve seams. Sew sleeves in armholes, easing to fit.
Bonnet Instructions 
With white, ch 64 (67, 70). 
Row 1 (right side): In 4th ch from hook work bubble (see Pattern Stitch); * sk next 2 chs, in next ch work bubble; rep from * across - 21 (22, 23) bubbles. Ch 3, turn. 
Rows 2 through 18: Rep Rows 2 through 18 of Sweater. 
Row 19: Rep Row 3. 
Row 20: Sk first 3 sts; * bubble in next sc; sk next 3 sts, sc in next sc, sk next 3 sts; rep from * to turning ch 3; bubble in 3rd ch of turning ch-3. Change to white by drawing lp through; cut blue. Ch 3, turn. 
Row 21: Bubble in each sc between bubbles. Ch 3, turn. 
Row 22: Sk first 3 sts; * bubble in next sc; sk next 3 sts, sc in next sc, sk next 3 sts; rep from * across. Ch 3, turn. 
Row 23: Bubble in each sc between bubbles.
Edging 
Rnd 1: Working across side, 2 sc in side of last bubble and in side of each rem bubble across to corner; working across front edge, 3 sc in each sp across to next corner; working along next side, 2 sc in side of each bubble; join in first sc. 
Rnd 2: Ch 1, sc in each sc to corner; ch 41, sl st in 2nd ch from hook and in each rem ch - tie made; sc in last sc made; working across front, * ch 3, sk next sc, sl st in next sc; rep from * across to next corner; ch 41, sl st in 2nd ch from hook and in each rem ch - tie made; working across next side, sc in each sc across back; join in first sc. 
Finish off and weave in all ends.
