GAUGE
In pattern stitch, 25 sts and 26 rows = 4"/10cm.

STITCHES USED
Chain (ch), single crochet (sc)

SPECIAL TERMS
Fsc: Foundation single crochet (This technique creates a foundation chain and a row of single crochet stitches in one) –
Step 1: Place a slip knot on hook, ch 2, insert hook in 2nd ch from hook and draw up a loop; yarn over and draw through one loop on hook (the "chain"); yarn over and draw through 2 loops on hook (the "single crochet").
Step 2: The following stitch is worked under the forward 2 loops of the stem of the previous stitch (into the "chain"). Insert hook into the face of the "chain" and under the nub at the back of the "chain", draw up a loop, yarn over and draw through one loop on hook (the "chain"), yarn over and draw through 2 loops on hook (the "single crochet"). Repeat for the length of foundation.

PATTERN STITCH
Seed Stitch (over an odd number of sts)
Set Up Row: Ch 1, sc in first sc, *ch 1, sk next sc, sc in next sc; repeat from * across, turn.
Row 1 (RS): Ch 1, sc in first sc, sc in next ch-1 sp, *ch 1, sk next sc, sc in next ch-1 sp; repeat from * across to last sc, sc in last sc, turn.
Row 2: Ch 1, sc in first sc, *ch 1, sk next sc, sc in next ch-1 sp; repeat from * across to last 2 sc, ch 1, sk next sc, sc in last sc, turn.

NOTES
1. To change color, work last stitch of old color to last yarn over, yarn over with new color and draw through all loops on hook to complete the stitch. Proceed with new color. Do not fasten off old color until instructed. Carry color not in use up side of piece until next needed.
2. Color changes are always made at the end of a WS row.
3. Leave long tails at the beginning and end of pieces. These can be used later when sewing the pieces together.

HELPFUL
Use a marker to mark the RS of the work.

BACK
With A, Fsc 65 (67, 69, 71, 75).
Set Up Row: Ch 1, sc in first sc, *ch 1, sk next sc, sc in next sc; repeat from * across, turn—33 (34, 36, 36, 38) sc and 32 (33, 34, 35, 37) ch-1 sp.
Rows 1 and 2: With A, work Rows 1 and 2 of Seed Stitch; change to B in last st of last row. Do not fasten off A.
Rows 3 and 4: With B, work Rows 1 and 2 of Seed Stitch; change to A in last st of last row. Do not fasten off B.
Repeat Rows 1–4 four more times. Fasten off B.
With A, repeat Rows 1 and 2 of Seed Stitch until piece measures 10 (10 1/2, 11, 12, 13)"/ 25.5 (26.5, 28, 30.5, 33)cm from beginning. Fasten off A.

FRONT
Work same as back until piece measures 5 (5 1/2, 6, 6 1/2, 7)"/12.5 (14, 15, 16.5, 18)cm from beginning; end with a WS row (Row 2 of Seed Stitch).

Divide for Fronts and Placket
Note: The front is now divided, leaving the middle stitches unworked for front placket opening. Each side of front is then worked separately.

First Front
Row 1 (RS): Work in Seed st across first 28 (30, 30, 32, 34) sts, sc in next sc, turn; leave remaining sts unworked (for front placket opening and second front)—29 (31, 31, 33, 35) sts (consisting of 16 (17, 17, 18, 19) sc and 13 (14, 14, 15, 16) ch-1 sp).
Row 2: Work Row 2 of Seed Stitch.
Repeat Rows 1 and 2 of Seed Stitch until piece measures 3 (3, 3, 3, 3 1/2)"/7.5 (7.5, 7.5, 7.5, 9)cm from divide; end with a WS row (Row 2 of Seed Stitch).

Shape Neck
Row 1 (RS): Work in Seed st across first 14 (14, 14, 16, 16) sts, sc in next sc, turn; leave remaining sts unworked—15 (15, 15, 17, 17) sts (consisting of 9 (9, 9, 10, 10) sc and 6 (6, 6, 7, 7) ch-1 sp).
Row 2: Work Row 2 of Seed Stitch.
Repeat Rows 1 and 2 of Seed Stitch until piece measures 2 (2, 2, 2 1/2, 2 1/2)"/5 (5, 5, 6.5, 6.5)cm from beginning of neck shaping. Fasten off.

Second Front
With RS facing, sk 7 (5, 7, 5, 5) sts following first front (for front placket). Join A in the 8th (6th, 8th, 6th, 6th) st.
Row 1 (RS): Ch 1, sc in same st as join, sc in next ch-1 sp, *ch 1, sk next sc, sc in next ch-1 sp; repeat from * across to last sc, sc in last sc—29 (31, 31, 33, 35) sts (consisting of 16 (17, 17, 18, 19) sc and 13 (14, 14, 15, 16) ch-1 sp).
Row 2: Work Row 2 of Seed Stitch.
Repeat Rows 1 and 2 of Seed Stitch until piece measures 3 (3, 3, 3, 3 1/2)"/7.5 (7.5, 7.5, 7.5, 9)cm from divide; end with a RS row (Row 1 of Seed Stitch).

SLEEVE (make 2)
With A, Fsc 57 (59, 63, 69, 69)
Set Up Row: Ch 1, sc in first sc, *ch 1, sk next sc, sc in next sc; repeat from * across, turn—29 (30, 32, 35, 35) sc and 28 (29, 31, 34, 34) ch-1 sp.
Rows 1 and 2: With A, work Rows 1 and 2 of Seed Stitch; change to B in last st of last row. Do not fasten off A.
Rows 3 and 4: With B, work Rows 1 and 2 of Seed Stitch; change to A in last st of last row. Do not fasten off B.
Repeat Rows 1–4 four more times. Fasten off B.
With A, repeat Rows 1 and 2 of Seed Stitch until piece measures 6 (6 1/2, 7, 8, 9)"/15 (16.5, 18, 20.5, 23)cm from beginning. Fasten off A.

FINISHING
Sew shoulder seams.

Hood
With RS facing, join A in top front corner (at beginning of neck shaping).
Row 1 (RS): Work Row 1 of Seed Stitch pattern around neck edge, working 28 (30, 30, 33, 35) sts across front neck edge to shoulder, 35 (37, 39, 39, 41) sts across back neck, and 28 (30, 30, 33, 35) sts across other front neck edge, turn—91 (97, 99, 105, 111) sts.  Note: When working in ends of rows across these edges, work sc in the end of a row, and skip the end of a row when working a ch-1.
Row 2: Work Row 2 of Seed Stitch.
Repeat Rows 1 and 2 of Seed Stitch until piece measures 7 (7 1/2, 8, 8 1/2, 8 1/2)"/18 (19, 20.5, 21.5, 21.5)cm from beginning. Fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing. Fold hood in half and sew top seam.

Front Placket
With RS facing, join A in lower corner of front placket opening, to work up front edge. Note: The lower edge of the front opening is left open. The lower edges of the front placket will be sewn to the lower edge of the opening later.
Row 1 (RS): Work Row 1 of Seed Stitch pattern around front placket opening, working 13 (13, 13, 15, 15) sts up edge of front placket, 87 (93, 101, 107, 107) sts around hood edge, and 13 (13, 13, 15, 15) sts down other edge of front placket, turn—91 (97, 99, 105, 111) sts. Notes: When working in ends of rows across these edges, work sc in the end of a row, and skip the end of a row when working a ch-1. To evenly space the sts around the hood edge, work 43 (46, 50, 53, 53) sts up hood edge to top seam, work 1 st into the seam, and then work 43 (46, 50, 53, 53) sts down the other hood edge.
Row 2: With A, work Row 2 of Seed Stitch; change to B in last st.
Rows 3 and 4: With B, work Rows 1 and 2 of Seed Stitch; change to A in last st of last row. Fasten off B.
Before working next row, mark button placement (left side for girls, right side for boys). Place two markers, evenly spaced, on the appropriate front, slightly to the left (for girls) or to the right (for boys) of the front placket.
Last Row(s): With A, continue in Seed Stitch, work 2 (1, 2, 1, 1) more rows. When working last row, work buttonloops when button markers are reached (on opposite side of front placket), as follows: ch 10 (instead of ch 1), or required number of chains to easily slip around button, before continuing in pattern to next button marker or end of row.
Place markers 4 1/2 (4 3/4, 5, 5 1/2, 5 1/2)"/11.5 (12, 12.5, 14, 14)cm down from shoulder seam on both sides of fronts and back. Fold sleeve in half, placing the center point at the shoulder seam. Sew the sleeve to body between markers. Overlap bottom edge of placket and sew to lower edge of front placket opening. Sew buttons opposite button loops. Sew side and sleeve seams. Using yarn needle, weave in all ends.
