SPECIAL TERMS
Fsc: Foundation single crochet (This technique creates a foundation chain and a row of single crochet stitches in one) –
Step 1: Place a slip knot on hook, ch 2, insert hook in 2nd ch from hook and draw up a loop; yarn over and draw through one loop on hook (the "chain"); yarn over and draw through 2 loops on hook (the "single crochet").
Step 2: The following stitch is worked under the forward 2 loops of the stem of the previous stitch (into the "chain"). Insert hook into the face of the "chain" and under the nub at the back of the "chain", draw up a loop, yarn over and draw through one loop on hook (the "chain"), yarn over and draw through 2 loops on hook (the "single crochet"). Repeat for the length of foundation.
PATTERN STITCH
Seed Stitch (over an odd number of sts)
Set Up Row: Ch 1, sc in first sc, *ch 1, sk next sc, sc in next sc; repeat from * across, turn.

Row 2: Work Row 2 of Seed Stitch.
Repeat Rows 1 and 2 of Seed Stitch until piece measures 7 (7 1/2, 8, 8 1/2, 8 1/2)"/18 (19, 20.5, 21.5, 21.5)cm from beginning. Fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing. Fold hood in half and sew top seam.
Front Placket
With RS facing, join A in lower corner of front placket opening, to work up front edge. Note: The lower edge of the front opening is left open. The lower edges of the front placket will be sewn to the lower edge of the opening later.
Row 1 (RS): Work Row 1 of Seed Stitch pattern around front placket opening, working 13 (13, 13, 15, 15) sts up edge of front placket, 87 (93, 101, 107, 107) sts around hood edge, and 13 (13, 13, 15, 15) sts down other edge of front placket, turn—91 (97, 99, 105, 111) sts. Notes: When working in ends of rows across these edges, work sc in the end of a row, and skip the end of a row when working a ch-1. To evenly space the sts around the hood edge, work 43 (46, 50, 53, 53) sts up hood edge to top seam, work 1 st into the seam, and then work 43 (46, 50, 53, 53) sts down the other hood edge.
Row 2: With A, work Row 2 of Seed Stitch; change to B in last st.
Rows 3 and 4: With B, work Rows 1 and 2 of Seed Stitch; change to A in last st of last row. Fasten off B.
Before working next row, mark button placement (left side for girls, right side for boys). Place two markers, evenly spaced, on the appropriate front, slightly to the left (for girls) or to the right (for boys) of the front placket.
Last Row(s): With A, continue in Seed Stitch, work 2 (1, 2, 1, 1) more rows. When working last row, work buttonloops when button markers are reached (on opposite side of front placket), as follows: ch 10 (instead of ch 1), or required number of chains to easily slip around button, before continuing in pattern to next button marker or end of row.
